How We've Helped
In September 2006 Smarter Travel Sutton was launched. This is a scheme to encourage and enable residents of Sutton to get out of their cars and travel by more sustainable means.
Some of the key achievements of the project to date:
- 75% increase in cycling
- 16% increase in bus patronage
- First London Borough to have 100% of schools covered by a travel plan
- Over 16,000 employees covered by a workforce travel plan
- 29% of residents aware of campaign
- 6% mode shift away from car
- 81% residents supported the programme
- 3.2% reduction in traffic levels
Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) was the element of the project where trained advisors knocked on the door of every resident in Sutton to offer free support and advice about travelling around the borough of Sutton. After two phases spread across the year 2007 this project is completed. And what a success it has been!
Our travel advisors went to over 70,000 households in Sutton. We managed to speak to 66% of those households (with the remaining 34% not being at home after 3 call attempts) and 45% requested further information about the best ways to get around the borough. That means that of the 66% of householders who were home and able to have a conversation with one of our advisors, almost 70% requested more information. If all those people swapped one car journey every week with a more sustainable mode, imagine what a different place Sutton would be….
